ABOUT
MY SON DAVID
SINGLE RELEASE DATE - 13TH APRIL '21
My Son David is a dark murder ballad and a conversation between a mother and her son. It is a variant of the song "Edward" associated with the singing of Jeannie Robertson from Scotland.
Leading the ballad are Atlantic Arc's distinctly expressive singers Pauline Scanlon and Jarlath Henderson, who contrast and unite to create a sense of intimacy and drama in the song; pacing its suspenseful dialogue to arouse the listener's imagination.
As with most of the ensemble's song arrangements, the approach creates a musical atmosphere in which the story unfolds. The instrumental section is a composition of Aidan O’Rourke’s, adapted to fit the mood of the song.
The band recorded the song over a full day in Malbay Studios with Martin O’Malley engineering.
"Although we arrived in studio with the basic plan for the song, the band's natural chemistry soon sparked off and the arrangement eventually shaped into the song as you hear it now. " Donal Lunny

LYRICS
O what's the blood that's on your sword,
My son David, O son David?
What's the blood that's on your sword?
Come promise, tell me true.
O that's the blood of my grey mare
Hey lady mother, ho lady mother;
That's the blood of my grey mare,
Because he would not rule by me.
O that blood it is owre clear,
My son David, O son David;
O that blood it is owre clear,
Come promise, tell me true.
O that's the blood of my grey hound,
Hey lady mother, ho lady mother;
That's the blood of my grey hound,
Because he would not rule my me.
O that blood it is owre clear,
My son David, O son David;
O that blood it is owre clear,
Come promise, tell me true.
O that's the blood of my huntin' hawk,
Hey lady mother, ho lady mother;
That's the blood of my huntin' hawk,
Because it would not rule my me.
O that blood it is owre clear,
My son David, O son David;
O that blood it is owre clear,
Come promise, tell me true.
O that's the blood of my brother John,
Hey lady mother, ho lady mother;
That's the blood of my brother John,
Because he raised his sword to me.
My son David, O son David;
My son David, O son David;
My son David, O son David
